目標を立てましょう

It's best to set a specific goal regarding when the student will be able to apply what they have learned. Some students urgently need to study a language for work, while others may be looking to study abroad in the near future. Others may have some sort of dream, such as being able to watch foreign movies and TV programs in the original language, or moving overseas some day. Learning works best when the teacher and student share the same goal with regard to the student's progress and speed, and this will also make it easy to decide on the curriculum.

日本語で教わるか、外国語で教わるか

Teaching in Japanese, or teaching in your own language?

It is believed that people are better able to remember something when it is connected to something else that they already know. This means that beginners will probably remember better if they learn in Japanese. For intermediate and advanced students, however, conversing and thinking in their second language without referring to Japanese provides them with real-life training. This is one of the major benefits students can receive from studying with a native speaker.

教材は

As long as it fits in with the goal you and the student have decided on, you can use commercially available textbooks, foreign-language newspapers, or even rental DVDs. Please note, however, that some textbooks produced by Japanese people can contain errors or unnatural language. You will need to look over any such textbook for these sorts of issues, including the use of regional colloquialisms.

Keep in mind that photocopying a commercial publication generally violates copyright law, but you should be okay just using a text or study guide purchased by the student.

The human memory process follows four stages: imprinting, retention, recall, and forgetting. For efficient study, it's best to put students in a situation where they will need to recall things before they forget them. For this purpose, we recommend two lessons a week.

And when a student has a looming deadline for one of their goals (such as an upcoming test), intensive study over a short-term period is a good idea. If the teacher and student have a hard time coordinating their schedules to make that happen, the student should at least make sure to review what was learned later that day or the next day, and then again several days later.

予習や復習は

In terms of making sure that a memory "sticks," reviewing material learned is indispensable. The necessity of pre-lesson preparation, however, can vary depending on the course material and the lesson style. Human memory also appears to become stronger when it is connected with emotion, so students can learn much more efficiently by engaging in a lively conversation with a teacher than they can by studying alone in silence.
